Professor Dr. Monika Reif is Head of the Safety-Critical Systems Lab at ZHAW, where she leads research on the design, implementation, and verification of complex socio-technical systems for safety-critical applications. 


Her work focuses on the safe integration of AI into safety-critical systems, combining advanced AI methodologies with rigorous verification approaches to enable certifiable and standards-compliant intelligent technologies. Her research spans key domains including mobility, robotics, and medical systems, and is embedded in national and European research projects. 


Before joining academia, she worked in safety engineering at BMW and Bombardier Transportation (now ALSTOM). 

She holds a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Reliability Engineering, and was awarded the VDI Ring of Honour for academic excellence. Her contributions were recognized in 2025 with her inclusion in the Top 100+ Women in AI & Data – Switzerland.
